Updated November 29, 2021: In line with the government’s public health guidance, the University of Cambridge expects face coverings to be worn in all our libraries by students, staff and visitors (unless exempt). Thank you for helping to reduce the risk of further disruption and illness.

The Betty & Gordon Moore Library offers a range of online support services and ways you can access our collections, to help you learn, teach and research. See individual reduced contact services web pages for variations in availability and consult the website regularly as we start to bring back library services to almost pre-Covid levels.

***New for the start of the academic year is our updated physical sciences libguide. This guide has been developed to help signpost useful information for staff and students studying Physical Sciences at the University of Cambridge. As the University moves towards more normal ways of working this guide contains information on updated opening hours and services, using both the physical and online study spaces as well as tools to help you stay productive.***

The Betty & Gordon Moore Library

How do I use a study space at the Moore?

The library is now offering readers free flow access to the library. There is no longer a requirement for readers to book a space you can now visit the library whenever you want. Access to the library is currently during our posted opening hours but it is intended that we will extend these over the coming weeks to almost pre-Covid levels.

What do I do when I arrive at the Moore?

Readers should allow people exiting the building to leave first before entering, to avoid a bottleneck in the lobby area.

We strongly recommend that you wear your face covering on entering the library and whilst you move around the building but you can remove it when seated - you should also santise your hands, using the dispensor in the lobby entrance as you arrive.

Where can I work?

Study spaces at the Moore are located on the 1st and 2nd floors and in the Glass Room in the Lower Ground (please see our floor plans). In order to maximise the space and ensure that we provide a safe space in which to work you will find spaces clearly identified.

Each space has hand sanitiser, anti-bacterial wipes and clear instructions, attached to the desk - we would ask that readers help us to provide this service by following these instructions.

  • We strongly recommend wearing a face covering whilst moving around the library, but you may remove it when seated (please check with those around you that they are happy for you to do so) We are highly sensitive and supportive to those staff and readers who are exempt from the expectation. Please visit the University’s Coronavirus Information pages for a helpful list of medical exemptions.

PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR OWN FACE COVERING AS WE CANNOT SUPPLY YOU WITH ONE.

  • Sanitise the work surfaces using the cleaning materials provided following this simple shared use protocol:
    • Wipe the surface of the desk with an antibacterial wipe.
    • Clean your hands with hand sanitiser.
    • When you wish to leave, wipe the surfaces again with a fresh antibacterial wipe.
    • Dispose of the wipes using the bins provided
  • Please work within the space provided and respect the personal space of staff and other library users

  • Take all your belongings with you when you leave and do not leave valuables unattended

  • If you need to talk to us, while you are here, please send us an email: moore-library@lib.cam.ac.uk

The Lower Ground area is still subject to an ongoing Collection Logistics project and is not complete available - readers should confine themselves to the Glass Roon area and refrain from working anywhere else. As this project work diminishes we will make available additional spaces in the Lower Ground. The two round tables on the Ground Floor are also being used as part of this project and we would ask that reader do not use them at this time.

What can I do whilst in the library?

  • You can access to the book stock on all three floor (1st, 2nd & Ground) and may borrow items from these areas using the self-service kiosk on the ground floor. You will need to follow the ‘shared use protocol’ detailed above when you do so. If you have problems using the kiosk please see a member of staff at the main service desk or if no one is available speak to the member of staff in the lobby entrance.
  • You will have access to the printer on the ground floor. You will need to ensure you have sufficient credit to cover the cost of the printing, which is managed through the DS-print service. Please see here for further information about adding credit. You will need to follow the ‘shared use protocol’ detailed above when you do so. If you wish to photocopy, please email the library about our scanning services.
  • You can make use of the computers available on each floor
  • We still need to reduce the amount of face to face contact between staff and readers, as much as possible, but we are still here to help you. If you need assistance when working in the building please use our live chat service which can be found on the Moore Library website this may not always be active but you can also email the library at anytime.
  • Drink bottled water and refill from the water cooler on the ground floor by the stair leading to the 1st floor. PLEASE ENSURE YOU BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLES, AS WE CANNOT PROVIDE CUPS OR BOTTLES FOR YOU TO USE

Restrictions – what can’t I do?

  • You won’t be able to use certain areas of the Lower Ground and those spaces available are clearly identified within the Glass Room.
  • You won’t be able to work at the round tables on the ground floor but you can borrow books from the shelves in that area and use the PCs and catalogue terminals.
  • In order to support the cleaning staff, whose workload has increased due to the pandemic, readers are not permitted to bring in or consume food anywhere in the library.
  • Toilets on the ground floor are desginated staff use only. Toilets available to readers are identifed as such on the 1st and 2nd floors.

Where can I eat and drink whilst visiting?

  • You won't be able to bring in or consume food in the library. There are tables outside the library where food can be consumed and we would ask that you take any food waste home with you rather than leaving it in the bins in the library.

Please help us to provide this service by respecting our guidelines and protocols, respect the staff and respect each other. The measures that have been put in place are there to keep all of us safe.
